Extreme Outlaw Pro Modifieds, Jets, Wheelstander, Show Cars Highlight 3-Day Event

DINWIDDIE, Va. – The world’s quickest and fastest Chevy doorslammers including the Extreme Outlaw Pro Modifieds of Virginia natives Tommy Franklin and Randy Weatherford converge on Virginia Motorsports Park this week for the opening event in the 37th annual SCSW Super Chevy Show Series.

It’s a three-day Chevy smorgasbord that extends from the drag strip to the show car arena to a Chevy-centric swap meet and expansive vendor midway.

If it was born with a bow tie, it likely will be represented in one arena or the other.  The car-and-truck show regularly attracts Camaros, Cavaliers, Corvettes, Cobalts, Caprices, Biscaynes, Berettas, Bel Airs, Nomads, El Caminos, Monte Carlos, Silverados, Cheyennes, Chevettes, Volts, Cruzes, Chevelles, Impalas, Malibus, Novas, Corvairs, Luminas, Tahoes, Colorados and Suburbans.

On the track, Franklin and Weatherford will send their 200 mile-an-hour replica 1969 Camaros after the Pro Modified championship against defending race champion Travis Harvey of Elon, N.C., and his late model Camaro.  The field also is expected to include reigning EOPM series champion Jay Cox of Smithfield, N.C., former PDRA champion Jason Harris of Pittsboro, N.C., former VMP Pro Mod winner Lizzy Musi of Mooresville, N.C., Chris Rini of Carmel, N.Y., and second generation Pro Mod driver Ty Tutterow of Yadkinville, N.C.

Along with the EOPM series, there will be exhibition runs featuring the “Cannonball Express” and “Chattanooga Choo Choo” jet-powered “trains” of veteran K.C. Jones plus the one-of-a-kind “Crazy Train” wheelstander.

Champions will be crowned in three different Chevy bracket classes including DriveDuracell.com Super Pro (featuring the Quick 32), Bracket 2 and D.O.T.  There will be a bonus bracket race on Saturday with full event champions crowned on Sunday.  Jr. Dragster champions also will be crowned on both Saturday and Sunday.

The Saturday program features Pro Modified qualifying at 1 p.m., 3 p.m. and 5 p.m., jet cars and the wheelstander at 1:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m., bracket eliminations starting at 2 p.m. and the first round of show car awards at 4 p.m. including the Club Participation award, Outstanding Paint, Outstanding Interior, Outstanding Engine, Outstanding Workmanship and the overall outstanding vehicle in the Stock, Street and Modified divisions.

On Sunday, the bracket racing program begins at 10:30 a.m. with Pro Mod rounds at 12 noon, 1:30 p.m., 3 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.  Jets and the wheelstander will make their final exhibition runs at 2 and 5 p.m.  The Best in Class awards will be announced at 4 p.m. recognizing, among others, the Best Camaro, Best Corvette, Best Monte Carlo, Best Truck and Best El Camino.  A Best of Show parade will follow at 5 p.m.

Adult admission is $22 a day or $35 for the weekend (including a Friday test-and-tune session from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m.)  Junior admission (ages 11-15) is $10 daily with children 10 and under free when accompanied by a ticketed adult.  In addition, there is a $5 discount for active and retired members of the military.

Thunder Valley historically hosts one of the largest Super Chevy Shows on the calendar. For more than 30 years, the Super Chevy Show has been known for some of the most exciting bracket and exhibition racing in the country and this year is no different. Add the Thunder Valley Mayhem on Saturday night and this show is a can’t-miss event.

At Thunder Valley Mayhem, fans should prepare themselves for the ultimate evening of entertainment, including fast machines, extreme thrills and edge-of-your-seat excitement, including: Pro Mods, Jet Cars, fireworks and more!

Those in attendance will have plenty of activities to keep them busy all weekend. Bracket racers will flock to Thunder Valley to take part in exciting racing action in Bracket 1 (Super Pro), Bracket 2 (Pro), DOT and True Street.

Fans also will get to see a spectacular selection of some of the region’s best classic and modern Chevrolets. Chevy die-hards will be impressed with the attention to detail given to these show machines. The Super Chevy car show is one of the biggest and best Chevy car shows around. Bowtie fans will not want to miss it.

Anyone interested in locating new products for their restoration project will want to visit the Performance & Restoration Marketplace.  If that hard-to-find used part is nowhere to be found, the car corral and used parts swap meet is definitely the place to go.
